This "Gem of the South" is located just northwest of the
town of Choix, Mexico, in the beautiful State of Sinaloa. Lake Huites
has a maximum depth of 210 feet and was created by damming the Rio
Chinipa and Fuerte rivers. This Lake is 4500 feet above sea level
and at full pool in the fall, this 30,000-acre lake is 18-miles
long in one direction and 15 miles long in another. After the dam
was finished, subsequent stockings with pure Florida Strain Largemouth
Bass have created a Bassin' Factory that can produce staggering
catch rates. This beautiful Lake has over 100 miles of shoreline
to fish and has every conceivable structure a bass could want. Once
called the "Mystery Lake", this beautiful body of water
is literally loaded with Bass... GIANT BASS!
From early October until December, the bass at Huites move up on
the banks and school heavily. My best days numbers wise have occurred
during this period, with 250 fish a day possible if you are on your
game. You usually have your choice of baits during this period,
with topwaters, jerkbaits, crankbaits and plastics all being good
choices. Beginning in January the bass begin to make the move into
their pre-spawn mood, where they stack up in the coves, pockets
and secondary points in five to ten feet of water. Then there is
the classic spawn beginning in mid February, and going on through
March when the Big Girls are busting with eggs and are willing to
hit most anything that is worked slow and deliberate. It is important
to note that the spawn in Huites is not typical of those occurring
in the United States. The fish here spawn much deeper, and it is
rare to actually be able to sight fish for spawners. This is the
case at many Mexican bass lakes. During April, May and June, the
angler can expect to get into some good numbers and really Big Fish
in the post spawn, by fishing the many bald points in the lower
lake with big spinnerbaits, deep crankbaits, and swimbaits. The
swimbait technique that is now used on many lakes in Mexico was
started right here on Lake Huites, and right here at Trophy Bass
Lodge. Giant Bass in May, now that's the ticket for some heart stopping
action that most Bass fishermen are missing out on. Of course, you
can head to the canyons almost any month of the year at Lake Huites
and catch huge numbers of the smaller two to five pounders.
Lake Huites, is a Catch and Release lake. While there is a ridiculous
amount of fish in Lake Huites, it is those double-digit fish with
superior genetics that we must preserve for the future of Lake Huites.
However, when you catch to fish of a lifetime, simply take a photo
of their trophy, weigh the fish and measure the length and girth,
then slip her back in the water to live and grow. Once you do that
I can have a replica of your fish mounted for you by some of the
best Taxidermists in the U.S.A.! They are guaranteed for life and
they look like they just swam out of the water!
